## Reseprentation of Mental Health in Popular TV Shows Faizan Raza and Lemisa Selimi --- ## Literature Review - Mental health disorders can be represented with more accuracy digitally without making movies any less interesting. A movie can have both “accurate portrayal of a mental disorder AND a visually exciting and compelling narrative”. (Lopera-Mármol) - Despite their efforts, the media can improve a lot on representation of mental health disorders such as decreasing stigma, etc. (McMahon-Coleman) - Art works have contributed in expressing stereotypes about mental health, although there have been some artists who tried to humanize too - Bonus: Furthermore, the mind dysfunction of rejecting the present moment and creating resistance is studied since it is represented a lot in movies and seen as “normal”... --- ## Scope The project hopes to raise awareness about mental health and the impact of media on the perception of mental health issues. Through this project, we will analyze and evaluate the accuracy of the representation of mental health topics in TV shows. - Over a period of time - Movies vs Research - Different Genres --- ## Values and Ethics - Usage of the data only within the scope of our research - Confidentiality agreement with the companies that will share the movies with us - Deletion of movies after the research has been completed - Findings will be presented in an accurate and responsible manner, considering potential impact on public perception. --- ## Methodology ## Project Initiation The project team will be assembled, and the project plan will be developed. Ethical considerations will be discussed and agreed upon. The objectives and scope of the project will be defined. ## Data Collection The most popular TV shows over the last decade will be identified, and data will be collected from streaming platforms such as Netflix and Hulu. The data will be carefully reviewed to ensure that it is suitable for analysis. ## Data Preprocessing The collected data will be preprocessed, which involves cleaning, filtering, and organizing the data to prepare it for analysis. ## Data Analysis The data will be analyzed using natural language processing and computer vision techniques. The dialogue and scripts from TV shows will be analyzed to identify the types of mental health portrayed, the prevalence of stigmatizing language, and the accuracy of the portrayal. Facial expressions and body language of characters with mental health issues will be analyzed to evaluate the accuracy of the portrayal. ## Results Interpretation The results of the analysis will be interpreted by the project team to identify any patterns and trends in the portrayal of mental health in popular TV shows over the last decade. The accuracy of the portrayal and the prevalence of stigmatizing language will be evaluated. The results will be presented in a clear and concise manner. ## Reporting The findings of the project will be reported in a comprehensive report. The report will highlight the main findings, including any trends and patterns identified, and will provide recommendations for improving the portrayal of mental health in popular TV shows. The report will be presented in an accurate and responsible manner. ## Dissemination The findings of the project will be disseminated through various channels, including social media, academic conferences, and mental health advocacy organizations. The aim is to raise awareness about the representation of mental health in popular TV shows and to promote accurate and responsible portrayal. ## Project Closure The project will be closed once all project activities have been completed. A final report will be produced, and all project documentation will be archived.
